Many Alaskans enjoy access to excellent and affordable dental care – some of the best in the world. However, a large segment of Alaska’s population does not have ready access to basic dental care. They struggle to pay for the treatment they need; particularly if they have delayed seeking care while their condition gets worse, more costly and difficult to treat.
To highlight this fact, and attempt to treat and educate the underserved about oral health including entry points for continued care, the Alaska Dental Society is sponsoring the Alaska Mission of Mercy (AKMOM). The AKMOM is a project that supports the Alaska Dental Society’s goal to increase access to care for those Alaskans most in need and with the greatest challenges to getting dental treatment.
Education is the most cost effective way to reduce oral disease. The Alaska Dental Society, through the AKMOM project, intends to educate the participants on the importance of good daily oral hygiene practices, a healthy diet and routine preventative dental care.
The Alaska Dental Society is committed to pursuing policies that enhance the dental profession and the well-being of all Alaskans.
